Default Dangerously Drafting

ATA Urges Motorists Not to Tailgate Trucks

ATA Notes Resurgence of Dangerous Practice Known as ‘Drafting’

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The American Trucking Associations is urging automobile drivers to avoid the dangerous practice of tailgating heavy trucks in efforts to increase fuel economy. The nation’s largest trucking industry trade group also is advising fleet safety directors to warn their drivers and owner-operators about the resurgence of this dangerous practice among automobile drivers, known as “drafting.”

“Drafting” involves driving a car very close behind a truck to use the reduction of wind resistance to reduce the amount of energy needed to propel the auto.

“Few driving behaviors are more dangerous on our highways than drafting,” said ATA President and CEO Bill Graves. “Drivers who practice this unsafe behavior are often out of the field of vision of the truck driver and are unable to see around the truck. ‘Drafting’ is unsafe, illegal and significantly increases the chances of injury and death. This practice compromises the safety of everyone on the nation’s highways and must not be considered a viable means of extending fuel mileage.”

ATA recently learned that drafting is being promoted by two Web sites dedicated to “hypermiling” and several recent news articles have described the hazardous fad. Hypermiling is an invented term for achieving high fuel economy by several means, including dangerous ones such as driving partly on the right shoulder, over-inflating tires, coasting with the ignition off and “drafting” behind tractor-trailers. Unfortunately, a segment about drafting shown recently on the Discovery Channel show “Mythbusters” is bound to prompt some drivers to try this stunt, which the show’s hosts called “suicidal.” ATA is working to educate the public on safe following distances through its Share the Road safety program.

“While drivers everywhere are feeling pinched by the high price of gasoline, safety should never come at the expense of fuel efficiency,” said John Hill, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration administrator. “FMCSA works closely with states and industry to educate consumers about large truck safety, and to target passenger vehicles that drive dangerously around commercial vehicles – including extreme tailgating, called ‘drafting.’ ‘Hypermilers,’ and others who embrace such reckless tactics, must consider their safety and those with whom they share the road, especially if a truck had to brake suddenly. These highly unsafe driving behaviors must be avoided by all motorists.”

Stephen Campbell, executive director of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance said, “There are far too many crashes involving cars and trucks where following too closely is identified as a contributing factor. If motorists are ‘drafting’ the truck driver more than likely can not see them. Enforcement officers are on the lookout for, and will take action on, these unsafe and dangerous driving behaviors by 4-wheelers around trucks.”

So there you have it Folks! Drafting might save you a couple of cents on gasoline but on the other hand, will put you in a world of hurt and shorten your life quicker than you can say " BIG TRUCK " so don't do it under any circumstance!!

Wildbill, what do you do when you get someone drafting? I have tried a few different methods to get a person to go around me. When on the interstate I click once down on the cruise control until I get slow enough for the car to go around. I had a truck not to long ago pull this on me and when I slowed down using the cruise he went around but slowed once again till I passed. The next time he pulled this stunt on me I just moved over quickly into the hammer lane and slowed quickly and let him by me. I stayed slow until he out distanced me. I let it bother me way to much when I look in the mirrors and I can barely see there tail lights. We have a backing camera and if I turn that on and I see the head lights close I know I have a problem I dont need.

It's difficult for me to really give out any kind of advice on this particular matter of Tailgating or as it is called Drafting!
Drafting has become epidemic on our highways and I just can't say enough about this type of extremely dangerous and life threatening practice.

Without sounding too judgemental or overbearing I have noticed that over the last five to seven years, a competetive mentality has developped in especially our young people who are usually good natured and productive citizens of society and who would normally give you the shirt off their backs, but as soon as they get behind the wheel of a car, something strange comes over them and they drive as if their was a planetary conspiracy to hold them back from getting to where they are going.

They seem to have this condition of extreme anxieity where as they will attempt to do some of the most daring and dangerous stunts to get to where they are going as fast and as easy as it can be done, but as my own Mental Health Therapist has explained to me, this type of bad behavior fades and most of the time completely goes away after full maturity has develloped in the person, but the bad news is that this type of disorder or bad behavior takes longer in men to work it's self out of the system!
Something about men having difficulty of growing out of infancy!!

Personally Guys, I think that Men experiencing difficulty with Maturity business is a bunch of Horsehockey and I know for sure that my shrink is off her rocker making a statement like that, but who cares, right?

Anyway! thats what I gots to say on the subject and on that note I gots to be going cause me and some of the local town boys are on our way out
to soap some car windows tonight!! Hee! Hee! Hee! and maybe we will ring a few doorbells too! Hee! Hee!

You crack me up Wildbill..LOL.. you know, if you happen to be running thru Ohio the last weekend in July, you should stop in at the Expedite Expo and introduce yourself!

Expedite Expo 2007 - An On Time Media, LLC. Production

About drafting, they've been talking about it on the news here because of the increase in accidents. We just had a multiple car accident the other night and sure enough, there's a car up under the ICC bumper of a truck. When they are running that close, all it takes is the truck lifting.. he doesn't even have to touch his brake.. just the Jake is enough slowdown to start a chain reaction.. and of course the cars behind are nose to bumper also. I think the one the other night was like 5 vehicles, and a lil kid died, because someone couldn't waste that 1mpg.

Sad.

Default Thanks for the invite!

I love the Buckeye State and it would be a sheer pleasure for me to stop in at the " Expedite Expo 2007 " and say hello!

The last couple of weeks in July are real crazy for us and I gots the Georgia run this year runnin sweet corn up to Canada for those nice people in Ontario and besides that, everytime I get into Ohio,I end up camping outside of the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame for weeks waitin to see if I can git an autograph from some Hall of Famer!

The last time I was at the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame in Ohio, Local Police caught me tryin to play that big ol' guitar outside the front entrance!!
They took ol' Wildbill down to the hospital and introduced me to some people all dressed up in white who introduced me to the rubber room, so I try to stay away now, even though Ohio Rocks!!!!!
