Default Peterbilt starting probs

Some time ago, I noticed that when my fuel level got down to around 1/4 tank (on the gauge, so probably more like 1/3 in actuality) I would have the crank the hell out of the engine to get it to start (if the truck sat for more than an hour without being started). Seemed like a fuel problem to me. It was like the thing lost its prime. I also noticed that at times if I parked on the side of a ramp somewhere, which caused a listing to the right, that I generally didn't have the problem. After consulting the mechanics at our shop, they all seemed to agree with me that it seems like there may be a crack in the fuel pick-up line in my right tank. Over the last few months the problem has gotten worse, so that if I park with less than 1/2 tank I encounter the problem. According to the shop mechanics, Peterbilt has welded the pick-up lines into the tanks and the only way to fix the problem is to replace the tank. I refuse to spend $1000 on a BS niggling problem like this. Here are my ideas to “fix” the problem without spending all that unnecessary cash.

Solution 1 (the most time and money intensive), pull the tank off, cut the plate off the top of the tank that the pick-up, return, and cross-over lines pass through, replace the pick-up tube, weld the plate back on and reinstall the tank. I can do all the work myself, except the welding. I’m not the best TIG welder, and wouldn’t trust myself to make such an important weld if I were.

Solution 2 – install one way check valves on the pick-up lines of each tank

Solution 3 – install a one way check valve on the inlet side of the primary fuel filter

Anybody out there ever encounter this problem or a similar one? Anyone out there with sound mechanical ability and experience want to offer and comments on any of these ideas? I’m having trouble finding the correct size check valves, but will be home in two days and know where I can find what I need.

I’d love any input or suggestions here, ‘cause I’d have long ago pulled my hair out if it were long enough to get a hold on.

Have you checked around for a used tank? I can't see a used tank even though it is a pete being $1000.00.

I would go with option 1) or buy a "new" "used" tank and replace it.
