Default What do you think about the New Hours of Service Regulations?

Actually its basically what we already had but with a twist-Effective October 1st this year,You can no longer split your sleeper berth time-has to be 8 hours consecutive.

Angry hos

they are forcing the drivers to drive 11 straight hours since they can't split the sleeper berth

What I think about the HOS regs is the same thing that I think about when I think of all the regulations that we have to know, understand and obey. We are considered unskilled labor by the government but they expect us to understand everything that they throw at us when they don't even know all of it (and they are supposedly skilled labor which means they know everything). You know the old "ignorance is no excuse" line that they catch us with all the time. The only thing that I am wondering is who is ignorant here? Us for letting them doing it? or them for doing it?

I got out of trucking before the new HOS started, so I can't really give an opinion. However, I have a website that you might want to consider checking out concerning trucking reform; I won't give the URL here, but if you want to message me, feel free to.

I'm fairly new to trucking, only been on the toad for 2 months. I was taught the old rules, and can't really understand the new rules that much. Basically, the way i run is, i usually do drive for the entire day and only stop for fuel and facility breaks at rest areas. I log these stops as 15 min breaks. Then, i just take my 10 hours at the end of the day. What is so hard about that? Now, i have yet to be pulled over or stopped at a scale and asked to see the logs, but it works for me. I never drive at night unless i absolutely have to. I love driving the open road all day and then just taking my 10 at the end.

Well lets see. I can no longer cheat the log when I'm waiting at shippers/receivers and extend my day by a few hours. So thats a good thing. Since I don't need naps during the day like some seem to I can still drive 11 hours most days. The bad news is i can still cheat the 70 hour clock. All that dock time during the week can be put on line one or two and that will extend my 70 hour week. So I still get to work 100 hours for the same pay.

Hopefully one day they will not only reform the HOS to some thing that actually makes sense but companies will also realise they have to pay drivers for the work they actually do if they want to keep good ones.
