HEADLINE: Unskilled truckers rampant: Licensing fraud found in 24 states over last 5 years

BYLINE: Stephen Franklin and Darnell Little, Chicago Tribune

Jan. 1--Missouri officials recently were preparing to send a letter to truck driver Hussein Osman, asking him to retake his commercial driver's license test.

The reason: Missouri and federal agencies were investigating whether the driving school that Osman attended fraudulently helped provide licenses for several hundred truck drivers, many of them Somali and Bosnian immigrants.

But the 25-year-old Osman was dead before the letter went out.

He was killed in an Oct. 1 collision that also took the life of Oklahoma State Trooper William McClendon, 37. State police later said both the trucker's and the trooper's actions may have led to the crash.

There are thousands of truck drivers like Osman on the nation's highways who got their licenses under suspicious circumstances. In the last five years, the federal government has discovered licensing fraud in 24 states. The payment-for-license schemes usually center on so-called third-party examiners who are hired by states to perform driver testing.

As a federal judge in Chicago remarked during a license fraud case several years ago, some of these truckers can be likened to "10-ton torpedoes."

If Wildbill had something to say...............

He would say to the Media ( Chicago Tribune ) and to the Honorable Federal Judge that these people who are or who were involved in obtaining their CDL's fraudulently are not Truckers and never will be!

It is clear that a Judge is not a Judge if he or she has not proceeded through the proper channels and obtained the proper licensing to become a judge, so it would not be appropriate to catorgorise them as so, like it is not at all appropriate to call someone a trucker who has not gone through the proper channels and procedures to become a professional truck driver and so it is extremely unfair of the media and the honorable judge to publicly report these criminels as Truckers!

I know the general public to be intelligent enough to know that this report in the Chicago Tribune is unreliable and prejudice to every professional truck driver in North America!

This is a deliberate slander on real truckers and I am surprised that a Federal Judge who is supposed to be a symbol of truth and justice is making a hurtful and unfair statement in the news media in regards to Truckers this way, but it seems to be the in thing today!
I heard Trillionaire Donald Trump on worldwide television say that Rosie O'Donald had a trash mouth on her like a truck driver!

What is wrong with these people who are supposed to be educated enough to become Federal Judges and Trillionaires but don't have enough sense to know that it is terribly wrong to slander and degrade defenseless people who work so hard for so little in this world!

As a funny man once said!! « I just can't get no respect! »R.I.P. Rodney Dangerfield

Wildbill,

This has always been a pet peeve of mine, you're exactly right! We see it all the time "TRUCK DRIVER HITS CAR, KILLS FAMILY OF 5"... Then you get down in the article, and it was a pick up or something, or the family pulled out in front of him, etc.....

Dreamer,

Sensationalism sells! and too often truck drivers are used as the instrument or tool to sell news on a slow day at the Journal or Newsroom!

I don't exactly know why some people go out of their way to belittle or
attack the integrity of truck drivers, but I do know one thing for sure!

« If ya gots it! A Trucker brought it! »

And.. to throw it right back in the public eye, we get stuff like this mess in CA where the tanker blew up on the approach to the Bay Bridge.. there's all kinds of stories circulating.

You get the Landline version:

Land Line Magazine: The Business Magazine for Professional Truckers

Tanker fire collapses highway

Investigators say it appears a tanker truck driver was exceeding the 50 mph speed limit when his rig crashed and exploded into flames on an approach to the Bay Bridge in Oakland, CA, early Sunday.

The resulting fire – fueled by 8,600 gallons of gasoline – caused an overhead ramp to collapse and cut off access from the bridge to eastbound Interstate 580.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports the trucker barely made it out alive before the explosion.

The man – 51-year-old James Mosqueda of Woodland, CA, was driving for Sabek Transportation of San Francisco. He suffered second-degree burns on his face, neck and hands.

Mosqueda managed to walk a mile and a half and hail a taxi to take him to a hospital after the incident occurred.

A California Highway Patrol spokesman told the Chronicle that Mosqueda has a clean driving record with no history of drug or alcohol problems, and that he had done volunteer work for a Christian ministry that helps troubled teenagers in the past.

Ok, he was speeding, but sounds like a decent enough guy. Bad, but.. not crucifying.

Then we get this AP version:

Crashed tanker driver had criminal record - U.S. Life - MSNBC.com

Crashed tanker driver had criminal record
Man who crashed tanker, brought down Bay Area road a convicted felon

The Associated Press
Updated: 7:53 a.m. ET May 1, 2007
OAKLAND, Calif. - The driver who crashed a tanker loaded with gasoline and brought down a heavily trafficked highway overpass had a history of criminal activity, including drug and burglary arrests, yet was given a commercial trucker's license.

James Mosqueda, 51, served two years and eight months in prison following a 1996 arrest for heroin possession in Sacramento County, court records show. His criminal rap sheet stretching back to 1981 includes arrests for burglary, felony drug charges and possession of stolen property, according to the California Department of Corrections and the Sacramento County District Attorney's office.

Yet Mosqueda was able to get his commercial truck driver's license because there is nothing in the state's vehicle code that prevents a convicted felon who has served his sentence from working as a truck driver — so long as he has a clear driving record, California Highway Patrol Chief Steve Vaughn said.

The elevated section of highway that funnels traffic from the Bay Bridge to a number of key freeways was destroyed early Sunday after flames from Mosqueda's overturned gasoline truck caused part of that overpass to buckle and collapse onto a roadway below. The driver walked away with second-degree burns and remained hospitalized Monday in San Francisco.

A predicted traffic nightmare failed to materialize Monday as workers heeded the dire warnings and stayed home, or seized on free public transportation. But transit officials cautioned that it will be months before things return to normal for Bay Area commuters.

The facts? A dude was going to fast, crashed and his truck burned. Yes a horrible thing, but which one sells more papers?
