One of the biggest mistakes that people make when purchasing a used truck is failing to get an insurance quote before they buy.  This can cause a person to be caught with their pants down when they see the number that the insurance company wants for a policy.  It is best to get a quote before hand.

It is easy to get a quote before you buy.  Do not make any promises to the seller, but get all the information from the truck and take it home with you.  Call up the insurance company and tell them what you know and get the closest quote you can get for the insurance that you need.  Most companies are more than happy to provide instant quotes over the phone in a very short amount of time.

Make sure that you are honest with the insurance company about the features of the truck you are looking into buying.  If you choose to make it sound like a less expensive model then you may be asking for trouble if you ever get into an accident.  If the insurance company finds out that you were not truthful then they may decide to not cover the accident and that could leave you on the hook for the cost and could also land you in jail with a suspended driver’s license.  It is not worth the risk for sure.

If the insurance company that you call does not give you the rate that you think you should get then call some other ones.  This is the best way to get a cheaper rate that you may be able to afford a little easier.  All insurance companies are different and the rates vary greatly from company to company.  The amount of coverage is also substantially lower or higher depending on the company.  Check with an agent to determine the best coverage amount.

Keep in mind that you will need to carry full coverage insurance if you are financing the truck instead of paying cash.  This is in place to protect the financial institution that holds the title against loss should the truck be destroyed or stolen.  If you receive enough money from insurance than you may be able to purchase another truck with the excess.

Getting a quote before you buy is the best way to protect yourself from undo expense and headaches later on down the road.  Most people do not think about the cost of insurance until it is too late.  By then they have already purchased the truck and are now stuck with the truck and an insurance rate that is not affordable.
