Anyone who is looking to buy a used truck is after a great deal.  No one wants to pay more for a truck than they have too and they want the most for the money they do have to spend.  There are many things that you can do to make sure that you get the best deal for your money.  Nothing that is too hard either, all that is really required is a little patience.

First and foremost you should not jump at the first deal that comes down the pike.  This will make it harder to find the best deal possible.  There are several people in this world who will make you believe that time is short when looking at their truck for sale.  This is one of the oldest scams in the book as they believe if they create a sense of urgency they will be able to close the deal.  The best course of action is to turn this back around at them and say that you will return with your decision at a later date.  More often than not, the person selling the truck using this tactic knows that there is a problem with it and they are anxious to unload it.

Next you should make sure that you do as much research as possible before setting out on a truck buying journey.  Select the make and model that you wish to purchase.  Decide on a year range and then do as much research on the automobile as humanly possible.

Check the book value for the truck through an authorized source.  This will give you a good base price that you should be looking at.  Use this base price to determine if an asking price is within range.  Many people who are selling trucks will increase the value to suit their desired price and unless you first investigate the actual value yourself you will be taking their word for it.

Always remember that any problem, no matter how minor detracts from the value.  This can work to your advantage when looking at trucks.  Some things may be so minor and inexpensive that you can do the work yourself, but that will help to bring the price down to a more comfortable number.  Carefully guide the seller through the list of problems (no matter how minor) then agree on a price that you will pay.  There is always room for negotiation.

Lastly you should speak to the affordability of the truck when dealing with a seller.  Most likely, the seller is getting rid of the truck because they no longer feel they can afford to drive it.  This will work to your advantage as you make them feel that you are doing them a favor by purchasing the truck and getting them out from underneath the responsibility of it.  Having cash on hand goes a long way when working this angle.  More people are willing to come down further when they see cash in hand as an option.
